⚡ Quick Facts

  • Standard work year: 2,080 hours (40 hrs/week × 52 weeks)
  • Formula: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52)
  • Half-time (20 hrs/week): 1,040-hour year — same salary means double the hourly rate
  • Overtime: hours over 40/week are usually paid at 1.5× — see our overtime calculator
  • Exempt employees: salaried workers classified as exempt generally don't earn overtime

How Salary-to-Hourly Conversion Works

Converting a salary to an hourly rate is simple division — but the number you divide by matters enormously. The standard benchmark is the 2,080-hour year: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. So a $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week equals $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour. That single formula powers the calculator above.

Your actual weekly hours change everything. A $60,000 salary at 50 hours a week is really $23.08 an hour — a 20% pay cut in disguise. This is why two job offers with the same salary can be very different deals: the one expecting 45-hour weeks pays a lower real hourly rate than the one respecting 40. Always convert before you compare.

The hourly view also makes everyday trade-offs visible. Once you know your real rate, you can price decisions honestly: is that $200 purchase worth seven hours of your life? Should you take the freelance gig at $35 an hour when your day job pays an effective $29? Hourly thinking turns vague money feelings into concrete math.

Two caveats. First, this converts gross pay before taxes — your after-tax hourly rate is lower; use our take-home pay calculator for that. Second, it doesn't value benefits: a $60,000 job with excellent health insurance and a 401(k) match can beat a $66,000 job with nothing. Treat the hourly rate as one input to the decision, not the whole decision.

📝 Example: $75,000 salary at 40 hours/week

Hourly rate: $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06/hour
Per 8-hour day ≈ $288.46 · Per week ≈ $1,442.31 · Per two weeks ≈ $2,884.62 · Per month ≈ $6,250.00
Now try 50 hours/week instead: the same salary drops to $28.85/hour. Hours are the hidden variable in every salary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 2080-hour year?

It's the standard full-time work year: 40 hours per week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Employers, payroll systems and salary comparisons almost universally use it as the baseline for converting between salary and hourly pay.

I work 45 hours a week. What should I enter?

Enter 45. The calculator divides by your real hours (45 × 52 = 2,340), giving your true effective rate. If those extra 5 hours are paid overtime at 1.5×, calculate them separately with our overtime calculator.

Does this include taxes?

No — these are gross (pre-tax) equivalents. To see what you'd actually keep per hour after tax, run your salary through our take-home pay calculator first, then convert that net figure here.

Should I include bonuses in my salary?

For comparing total compensation, yes: add your expected annual bonus to the salary field. For your base hourly rate, leave bonuses out. Just be consistent when comparing two offers.

How do I compare a salary offer with an hourly offer?

Convert the salary to hourly with this calculator, then compare directly with the hourly offer — but adjust for benefits. Hourly roles sometimes lack paid time off, health insurance and retirement matches that salaried roles include.

Can I convert hourly back to salary?

Yes — our hourly to salary calculator does the reverse: enter your wage and weekly hours to get annual, monthly and biweekly equivalents.
