How Your Canadian Paycheck Works
Canada taxes you twice on the same paycheque: once by the federal government and once by your province. This calculator combines the 2026 federal brackets with Ontario's provincial brackets — Ontario being Canada's most populous province and the default most Canadians expect.
1. Federal income tax. Five marginal brackets run from 14% to 33%. Everyone gets the federal basic personal amount ($16,452 for 2026) tax-free, which this calculator subtracts as a credit at the lowest rate. Because brackets are marginal, only the dollars inside each band are taxed at that band's rate.
2. Ontario provincial tax. Ontario layers its own five brackets (5.05% to 13.16%) on top, with its own basic personal amount of $12,989. Ontario then adds a quirk all its own: a two-tier surtax — 20% of basic provincial tax above $5,818, plus 36% of basic tax above $7,446. It sounds complicated, but the calculator handles it automatically.
3. Combined bite. Add the two together and a middle-income Ontarian faces a combined marginal rate in the low 40s on each extra dollar — noticeably higher than the headline federal rates suggest. That's why a "Canada" calculator that only shows federal tax would badly understate what leaves your paycheque.
4. What's left = your take-home pay. CPP/QPP and EI premiums, union dues, pension contributions and benefit premiums also come off a real paycheque, but those depend on your job and province, so this calculator focuses on the two income taxes everyone pays.
📝 Example: $100,000 salary in Ontario, paid biweekly
Gross per paycheque: $100,000 ÷ 26 = $3,846.15
Federal tax ≈ $553.57 · Ontario tax (incl. surtax) ≈ $245.30 per paycheque
Take-home ≈ $3,047.29 every two weeks ($79,229.45 per year, an effective rate of about 20.8%). Try it above — then compare with our US calculator to see how the two systems differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this calculator use Ontario?
Ontario is Canada's largest province by population and the most common default for national estimates. Every province sets its own brackets and credits — Alberta, BC and Quebec, for example, all differ — so treat this as an Ontario estimate, not a national one.
What is the Ontario surtax?
It's an extra tax calculated as a percentage of your basic Ontario tax: 20% of the amount above $5,818, plus 36% of the amount above $7,446. It effectively pushes Ontario's top combined marginal rate higher than the bracket rates alone suggest.
Does this include CPP and EI deductions?
No. Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance premiums are significant payroll deductions, but they have their own earnings caps and rates that change yearly. This calculator covers income taxes only — subtract your CPP/EI from the result for a fuller picture.
What is the basic personal amount?
It's a tax-free threshold applied as a credit at the lowest bracket rate. For 2026 it's $16,452 federally and $12,989 in Ontario — meaning that slice of income effectively escapes both taxes.
I'm in Quebec / BC / Alberta — can I still use this?
You can use it as a rough guide, but your provincial tax will differ. Quebec in particular runs a quite different system (including its own pension plan). Use the federal portion as a starting point and check your province's finance ministry for exact brackets.
Is this tax advice?
No. This is an educational estimate based on published 2026 federal and Ontario brackets. For decisions with real money on the line, confirm with a tax professional or your payroll department.
