How Your New York Paycheck Works

New York is one of the few states where your paycheck can be taxed at three government levels at once. Here's how each layer takes its share.

1. Federal income tax. The same nationwide: marginal brackets from 10% to 37%, with the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single) subtracted first. Only income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

2. FICA taxes. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500, and Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages (plus 0.9% over $200,000 for single filers). Your employer matches the base amounts.

3. New York state income tax. Nine brackets run from 3.9% to 10.9%, applied after the state's own standard deduction ($8,000 single). Note this calculator uses a simplified schedule — it omits New York's "benefit recapture," a quirk that phases out the benefit of lower brackets for higher earners.

4. Local tax (not modeled). If you live in New York City, an additional city income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% comes out of your pay; Yonkers residents pay a city surcharge too. Subtract roughly that amount from the result below if it applies to you.

5. What's left = your take-home pay. Benefit deductions like health premiums or 401(k) contributions come out as well, but those depend on your employer, so this calculator focuses on taxes.

📝 Example: $80,000 salary in New York (outside NYC), paid biweekly, single filer

Gross per paycheck: $80,000 ÷ 26 = $3,076.92
Federal tax ≈ $337.31 · Social Security ≈ $190.77 · Medicare ≈ $44.62 · New York state tax ≈ $143.19
Take-home ≈ $2,361.04 every two weeks ($61,387.00 per year). Live in Manhattan? NYC's city tax would shave roughly another $95–$120 off each paycheck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my New York paycheck smaller than the calculator shows?

The most common reason is local tax. This calculator covers state tax only — New York City's income tax (3.078%–3.876%) and Yonkers' surcharge are extra and come straight out of city residents' paychecks.

Do NYC residents really pay three income taxes?

Effectively, yes: federal, New York State, and New York City income tax all withhold from the same paycheck. It's one reason NYC has among the highest combined tax burdens in the country.

What is New York's benefit recapture?

It's a mechanism that gradually takes back the savings from New York's lower brackets once income passes certain thresholds, so high earners effectively pay the top rate on more of their income. This calculator omits it, so very high earners will see a slightly optimistic result.

Does New York tax Social Security or retirement income?

New York fully excludes Social Security benefits from state tax, and also excludes qualifying pension and annuity income — a notable break for retirees in an otherwise high-tax state.

How can I reduce my New York withholding?

Max out pre-tax contributions — 401(k), HSA, FSA and commuter benefits all shrink the income New York taxes. Then check your IT-2104 (New York's version of the W-4) to make sure your allowances reflect your real situation.

Is this tax advice?

No. This is an educational estimate using a simplified NY schedule (benefit recapture omitted; NYC/Yonkers local tax not modeled). For decisions with real money on the line, confirm with a tax professional or your payroll department.

Disclaimer: Results are estimates based on 2026 federal brackets, standard deductions and FICA rates, plus a simplified New York state schedule (benefit recapture omitted). NYC and Yonkers local income taxes are NOT modeled — city residents should expect lower take-home pay. Actual withholding depends on your W-4/IT-2104 and employer deductions. Not tax advice.
